God specializes in turning the mundane into the meaningful. God not only moves in unusual ways, He also moves on uneventful days. He is just as involved in the mundane events as He is in the miraculous. One of my longtime friends, Howie Stevenson, often says with a smile, "God moves amongst the casseroles" (Swindoll, 1997, p. 38).
It seems like most of my days are uneventful ones--at least uneventful in the sense of the Kingdom. (rarely uneventful when it comes to my students, which is a different story) Last night I challenged you guys to reflect at the end of each day this week on how you saw God's presence in your day. He is always there--even when His name isn't as much as whispered, as we see in Esther!
I love that Swindoll quote and the idea that God moves amongst the casseroles. If we were honest, we'd probably admit that most of our days feel like casseroles. Maybe we get highs off of winning a big game or a new boy or a college acceptance letter--but even then I forget to recognize God's hand in the midst of all of it.
So where did you see God's presence in your life today? God gave me the opportunity to share about my faith to one of my grad students and give her a book about loving God with your mind (or knowing how to express Christianity in an intellectual way).
The Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.- Exodus 13:21-22
The Lord was always with the Israelites; He never left them. Some days He was very visible (parting the Red sea, water bursting from rocks, communicating the Ten Commandments). Other days He was only seen as the cloud by day or pillar of fire by night, but He was always there.
So where did you see God's presence in your life today?
